Root Canal Retreatment

Root canal retreatment therapy is rare, but it can occur.

A tooth that has been treated with root canal therapy can last a lifetime. But if the problem returns, or a new issue affects the same tooth, endodontists can use specialized procedures to address the problem.

During a root canal retreatment, the endodontist re-opens the affected tooth, removes the filling material placed during the initial procedure, and examines the tooth for new damage. The endodontist will look for new fractures, new infection, and complex tooth anatomy where the initial treatment may not have been effective.

Once the new issues have been treated, new filling material is placed into the tooth, and the tooth is sealed with a temporary filling and allowed to heal. After it has healed, the tooth is given a new crown or restoration and is again fully functional.
