What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that addresses the soft inner tissues of the teeth, and the doctors who practice it are endodontists. (The word “endodontist” is made up of two Greek roots, “endo” meaning “inside” and “odont” meaning “tooth.”) These dentists are highly trained in more difficult, sensitive procedures such as root canals.

Endodontists are more highly trained than normal dentists, undergoing two or more additional years of training in the diagnosis and treatment of the inner tissues of the teeth. This is why dentists generally refer more difficult cases to endodontists.

Besides root canals, endodontists also perform endodontic surgery to address a variety of issues with the roots of teeth, such as calcium deposits, or damage to the root surface or surrounding bone.
